Stefan Marr I head the Institute for System Software at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. My work focuses on programming language implementation techniques, compilation, complex concurrent systems, and tooling.

I am personally interested in making interpreters faster, detecting and preventing concurrency bugs at run time, and use modern language runtime systems to provide programmers with better tooling.

Nov 17, 2025: Benchmarking Language Implementations: Am I doing it right? Get Early Feedback!

Modern CPUs, operating systems, and software in general do lots of smart and hard-to-track optimizations, leading to warmup behavior, cache effects, profile pollution and other unexpected interactions. For us engineers and scientists, whether in industry or academia, this unfortunately means that we may not fully understand the system on top of which we are trying to measure the performance impact of, for instance, an optimization, a new feature, a data structure, or even a bug fix.

One of the first things that I found problematic about paper writing was the manual processing and updating of numbers based on experiments. Ever since my master thesis, this felt like a unnecessary and error prone step.
